He aha te tūranga - About the role:
Our Kāhui Mauaka team provide strategic cultural advice to Hato Hone St John to build cultural competency, partner with trust and confidence with iwi and Māori communities in the spirit of Mana Motuhake and help innovate and codesign initiatives that will enable our iwi partners to deliver their vision for equity in action.
As the National Māori Health and Equity Lead - Community Health this role will focus on identifying and initiating relationships with iwi, hapū, mana whenua/mātāwaka to establish high trust collaborative working partnerships. These partnerships in turn will help steer the development and delivery of new and innovative, services/initiatives aligned to consider and reflect Māori aspirations and equity including of accessibility.
The desired outcome is to bring about genuine improvements to Māori health in a way that meets the objectives of the organisation.
Key responsibilities:
- Act as a key advocate and champion for the understanding and recognition of the importance of tikanga Māori and the Hato Hone St John Tiriti alignment strategy and plan within relevant directorates and across St John by being a member of the Senior Leadership Team.
- Collaborate with, contribute to and work closely with Kāhui Mauaka to ensure consistency of messaging, and translation of strategic intent into effective implementation.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with colleagues and functional/ managers, acting on an informed understanding of the business and Te Ao Māori to provide considered and quality advice and support.
- Develop initiatives and programs of work which will allow the Hato Hone St John - to meet the needs of its Māori patients, communities, customers and supporters as well as its obligations under Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
- Ensure tikanga Māori is applied to strategic thinking and delivery so as to support a demonstrable focus on health equity and quality improvement for Hauora Māori; reduce racism and discrimination and promoting cultural safety and competence; and actively look for opportunities to develop an effective Te Tiriti based lens to service delivery and inclusion.
Ko wai koe - About you:
- Previous experience working within the health sector is beneficial with knowledge and appreciation of the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and its application for Hato Hone St John in the community and health-care environments.
- Proficiency in te reo me ōna tikanga.
- Previous management experience, with the ability to focus on detail and execute strategy, informed by a strong understanding of health and specific in-depth knowledge of the challenges facing Māori.
- Evidence of innovative thinking and ability, with the skill and experience to translate this - and strategic goals- into effective and achievable operational and performance plans, handling the process and detail and making informed judgements and decisions as well as monitoring progress and outcomes.
- Experience in building and maintaining key relationships with health stakeholders within communities, iwi, hapū and whānau.
- Has specific in-depth knowledge of the challenges facing health and social care, more specifically the social determinants of health.
